You can have up to 15 titles checked out at one time on overdrive. Titles checkout for 2 weeks at a time.

  1. Go to the Houston Area Digital Media Catalog (HADMC) home page by tapping on the  icon on the top left of the screen, and selecting “Houston Area Digital Media Catalog” under “My Libraries”.
    1. You can also get to the catalog by tapping on “Add a Title” from your bookshelf.
  2. Tap on the search bar and type in either the name or author of the title you want to check out.
  3. Once you have found the title you want, tap “Borrow” underneath the title.
    1. If you tap the arrow next to the word “Borrow” you can specify how long you would like to check out the book for (the default checkout period is 2 weeks, but you can also check out a book for 1 week too).
  4. Once you’ve checked out a title, you can download it to your iPhone/iPad by going to your “Loans” page.
  5. To get to your “Loans” page tap on the  icon on the top right corner of the HADMC homepage.
  6. Tap “Download” underneath the title you want to download.
    1. If the app asks you which type of eBook you want to download, select the “EPUB eBook” format.
  7. Your title is now ready to read on your bookshelf.

If you want to check out a title that isn’t available, you can place a hold on it. This will put you on the waiting list for this title. You can only have 10 titles on hold at a time, so be selective about what you place on hold.

  1. Go to the HADMC home page.
  2. Search for the title you want to place on hold.
  3. Tap “Place a Hold” underneath the title.
  4. It will then ask you for an email address. Enter in an address that you check regularly, because this is how overdrive will let you know when your holds are available from now on.

When your hold is available, Overdrive will send you an email. Depending on your settings, your hold will either be automatically checked out to you (on your “Loans” page), or you will have to manually check it out from your “Holds” page. To get to your “Holds” page:

  1. Tap  in the top right corner of the HADMC home page.
  2. Tap on “My Account
  3. Tap on “Holds

In overdrive you get the option to renew materials only within the last three days that you have them checked out.

To renew a title:

  1. Go to your “Loans” page
  2. Tap “Request Again” underneath the title you want to renew

If the title you want to renew is on a holds list, you won’t be able to renew it. If you want to continue reading the book, you’ll have to put yourself back on hold for the title and wait for it to become available again.

Titles will automatically delete off of your device when they expire, but if you would like to return a title early follow these steps:

  1. Go to your bookshelf by tapping  in the top left corner, then tapping “Bookshelf
  2. Tap “Edit” in the top right corner
  3. Tap “Return” under the item that you wish to return

If you have already placed your allotted 10 holds, you can put a title on your wish list to save it for later. Your wish list can have up to 5,000 items on it and you can add titles to it by clicking the  icon underneath the title.

*These instructions are specific to iPhone/iPad users, however, they can also be used for any smart phone. The only difference is where you download the app from (App store, Google play store, etc.)
