When using a legacy kindle device (one that doesn’t have apps or web browsers), you will need to use your computer to log in to overdrive and check out titles.
Using your computer, go to hadc.overdrive.com on your device.
Click “Sign In” in the top right corner of the screen.
Select “Helen Hall Library” from the drop-down menu on the left-hand side, then enter in your library card number without the spaces (Your number will begin with 2304600…), and click “Sign-in”.
Click on the search bar and type in either the title or author of the title you want to check out.
Once you have found the title you want, tap “Borrow” underneath the title.
If you click on the arrow next to the word “Borrow” you can specify how long you would like to check out the book for (the default checkout period is 2 weeks, but you can also check out a book for 1 week too).
Once you’ve checked out a title, you can download it to your kindle by going to your “Loans” page.
Make sure that the title you want has a “Kindle Book” format before you check it out, otherwise you won’t be able to read it on your kindle. To do this:
Click on the title to get a more detailed view of the item
Look on the right-hand side of the page under “FORMATS” and make sure one of the formats is “Kindle Book”
To get to your “Loans” page tap on the next to the search bar.
Tap “Read now with Kindle” on the title you want to download. This will direct you to the Amazon website.
Tap “Get Library Book” on the right-hand side of the page.
You will be prompted to log in to your amazon account.
Once you log in, select the device that you want to send the book to and tap “Continue”.
If you only have one kindle device associated with your amazon account, it will automatically download to that device.
Your title will now be downloaded onto your Kindle.
In overdrive you get the option to renew materials only within the last three days that you have them checked out.
To renew a title:
Go to your “Loans” page
Tap “Request Again” underneath the title you want to renew
If the title you want to renew is on a holds list, you won’t be able to renew it. If you want to continue reading the book, you’ll have to put yourself back on hold for the title and wait for it to become available again.
If you want to check out a title that isn’t available, you can place a hold on it. This will put you on the waiting list for this title. You can only have 10 titles on hold at a time, so be selective about what you place on hold.
Log in to “Overdrive”.
Search for the title you want to place on hold.
Click “Place a Hold” underneath the title.
It will then ask you for an email address. Enter in an address that you check regularly, because this is how overdrive will let you know when your holds are available from now on.
When your hold is available, Overdrive will send you an email. Depending on your settings, your hold will either be automatically checked out to you (on your “Loans” page), or you will have to manually check it out from your “Holds” page. To get to your “Holds” page:
Click on “My Account” in the top right corner.
Click on “Holds”.
Titles will automatically delete off of your device when they expire, but if you would like to return a title early follow these steps:
Go to your “Content and Devices” page on your amazon account.
Find the title in the “Your Content” list, then select .
Click “Return this Book”
If you have already placed your allotted 10 holds, you can put a title on your wish list to save it for later. Your wish list can have up to 5,000 items on it and you can add titles to it by clicking the icon underneath the title.
