eBooks Made Easy: Kindle Fire

Learn how to manage your eBooks on your iPad, Kindle, and smart devices!

  1. Go to Amazon on your device.

  2. Search for “Overdrive App” and download it (It’s free).

  3. Open the app and select “Sign In” (or “Sign Up” if this is your first time using overdrive).

  4. Tap “Sign in using library card”.

  5. Search for “Helen Hall Library” and then tap on “Helen Hall Library” (It should be the first result of your search).

  6. This will direct you to the Houston Area Digital Media Catalog (HADMC) sign in screen.

  7. Select “Helen Hall Library” from the drop-down menu, then enter in your library card number without the spaces (Your number will begin with 2304600…).

  8. Next, you’ll need to add your library by tapping

  9. Search for “Helen Hall Library”, tap on “Helen Hall Library”, then tap on “Houston Area Digital Media Catalog”. This will direct you to the HADMC home page.

  10. Tap “Sign In” and log in by selecting “Helen Hall Library” from the drop-down menu and entering in your library card number. Overdrive is now ready to use.

  1. Go to the Houston Area Digital Media Catalog (HADMC) home page by tapping on the  icon on the top left of the screen, and selecting HADMC under “My Libraries”.

    1. You can also get to the catalog by tapping on “Add a Title” from your bookshelf.

  2. Tap on the search bar and type in either the title or author of the title you want to check out.

  3. Once you have found the title you want, tap “Borrow” underneath the title.

    1. Make sure that the title you want has a “Kindle Book” format before you check it out, otherwise you won’t be able to read it on your kindle. To do this:

      1. Tap on the title to get a more detailed view of the item

      2. Scroll down and tap on “Formats” and make sure one of the formats is “Kindle Book

    2. If you tap the arrow next to the word “Borrow” you can specify how long you would like to check out the book for (the default checkout period is 2 weeks, but you can also check out a book for 1 week too).

  4. Once you’ve checked out a title, you can download it to your kindle by going to your “Loans” page.

  5. To get to your “Loans” page tap on the  icon on the top right corner of the HADMC homepage.

  6. Tap “Read now with Kindle” underneath the title you want to download. This will direct you to the Amazon website.

  7. Tap “Get Library Book” on the right-hand side of the page.

  8. You will be prompted to log in to your amazon account.

  9. Once you log in, select the device that you want to send the book to and tap “Continue”.

    1. If you only have one device associated with your amazon account, it will automatically download it to that device the next time it connects to wi-fi.

  10. Your title will now be downloaded onto your Kindle.

In overdrive you get the option to renew materials only within the last three days that you have them checked out.

To renew a title:

  1. Go to your “Loans” page

  2. Tap “Request Again” underneath the title you want to renew

If the title you want to renew is on a holds list, you won’t be able to renew it. If you want to continue reading the book, you’ll have to put yourself back on hold for the title and wait for it to become available again.

If you want to check out a title that isn’t available, you can place a hold on it. This will put you on the waiting list for this title. You can only have 10 titles on hold at a time, so be selective about what you place on hold.

  1. Go to the HADMC home page.

  2. Search for the title you want to place on hold.

  3. Tap “Place a Hold” underneath the title.

  4. It will then ask you for an email address. Enter in an address that you check regularly, because this is how overdrive will let you know when your holds are available from now on.

When your hold is available, Overdrive will send you an email. Depending on your settings, your hold will either be automatically checked out to you (on your “Loans” page), or you will have to manually check it out from your “Holds” page. To get to your “Holds” page:

  1. Tap  in the top right corner of the HADMC home page.

  2. Tap on “My Account

  3. Tap on “Holds

Titles will automatically delete off of your device when they expire, but if you would like to return a title early follow these steps:

  1. Go to your “Content and Devices” page on your amazon account.

  2. Find the title in the “Your Content” list, then select .

  3. Click “Return this Book

If you have already placed your allotted 10 holds, you can put a title on your wish list to save it for later. Your wish list can have up to 5,000 items on it and you can add titles to it by clicking the  icon underneath the title.

Important information to keep in mind

  • You can check out up to 15 titles at one time

  • You may have up to 10 titles on hold, and 5,000 titles on your wish list

  • Since titles automatically delete when they expire, there are no fees/fines you can accrue through overdrive

  • You can’t renew items until 3 days before they’re due

  • Items on hold can’t be renewed

  • The default checkout period is 2 weeks
