Dir. Sam Mendes (trailer)

1917 is a masterful work that tells the story of two soldiers during World War I who must race against the clock in order to stop an assault on the British Army by the Germans. Filmed to look like one long, continuous shot, director Sam Mendes and cinematographer Roger Deakins have created a unique war film that pays to tribute to the films that came before. Featuring two newcomers, George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman, the film primarily focuses on their characters as they cross enemy lines, but many well-known veteran actors also show up from time-to-time to help the characters out along the way.

The film is beautifully shot in a way that often makes you forget it's only one shot and pulls you into the world of the war ridden French countryside. While the film isn't full of constant action scenes like many war films are, the movie is still thrilling to follow along with as you fear the soldiers and what they may encounter. Thanks to a tense musical score by Thomas Newman you can literally feel the minutes slip by as the characters run out of time to complete their mission.

I recommend 1917 to anyone who loves war films and history, as well as those who want a unique and fresh take on war films.
