Classic Review: Before Sunrise (1995)

Dir. Richard Linklater (trailer)

Richard Linklater's Before Trilogy, consisting of movies Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013) creates one of the greatest and most unique trilogies put to film. All three films are led by indie darlings Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy and the camera rarely, if ever, leaves their faces as they adventure through different European cities over the course of many years as their relationship changes and grows over time.

Beginning in 1995 with Before Sunrise, the main two characters Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy) meet on a train while traveling across Europe. When Jesse asks Celine to get off the train with him in Vienna before his flight back home to America, she joins him and they spend the night wandering around and discussing many topics about life, love, politics, religion, etc.

This film is one of the most interesting love stories I've seen before and completely blew me away with how well it was made. The entire movie feels natural and believable even though the story almost has a fairy tale-like quality to it. Hawke and Delpy both give amazing performances, sparring with one another and showing off their amazing chemistry.

I recommend this film to anyone who likes indie movies and unique storytelling. Fans of Linklater's other films will definitely enjoy this, which is based on one of his own personal experiences.

Rating: ★★★★★

Recommended for fans of: drama, Amelie (2001), romance, Paterson (2016), Midnight in Paris (2011)
