Classic Review: Bird (1988)

Dir. Clint Eastwood (trailer)

Clint Eastwood's biopic of jazz legend Charlie "Bird" Parker reinvents the genre of biographical films. Eastwood creates a story as unique and messy as Parker's life actually was. The film follows the short life of Parker as he goes from a young, frenetic saxophone player, to a much sought after improvisational jazz player. Parker is played by Forest Whitaker, who gives a tender yet understated performance that seems to be the polar opposite of Parker's now infamous musical style.

The film primarily focuses on a series of vignettes and moments from Parker's life, including meeting his wife Chan, the loss of their child, and an infamous tour in the South with a mixed race band. Primarily taking place in early 1950s New York City, Eastwood's direction transports the audience to this gritty post-war world filled with endless possibilities. Through all of this Parker battles with his heroin and alcohol addictions that would ultimately end his life.

The performances in the film, especially Whitaker's, are what really makes this movie as engaging as it is. Whitaker feels perfectly cast as Parker and even convincingly plays the saxophone in ensemble scenes.

Fans of biographical films and music history will definitely enjoy this unique look into the life of Charlie "Bird" Parker and will enjoy the great performances.

Rating: ★★★☆☆
