Birds of Prey (2020)

Dir. Cathy Yan (trailer)

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is an exciting take on the superhero (or villain) genre. Director Cathy Yan creates a world bursting with color that contrasts the gloomy atmosphere of Gotham City. Focusing on Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) after her break-up with the Joker, Birds of Prey brings together an all-star cast of actors including, Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Rosie Perez.

While most of the movies in the DC Universe are often more serious and dark, Birds of Prey takes a different approach by adding humor into the mix. The film itself is very self-referential and often acknowledges DC characters and events that are not in the film, like Bruce Wayne. Margot Robbie gives an impressive performance as Harley, capturing her personality along with doing many of her own stunts in the film. Newcomer Ella Jay Basco also gives a great performance as Cassandra Cain, a young pickpocket who becomes entangled with Harley, after stealing from eccentric gangster Roman Sionis (McGregor).

Whereas 2016's Suicide Squad ended up being somewhat of a disappointment with audiences and critics, Birds of Prey successfully pulls off the stylistic choices that helps to give the film a unique flair. Those who enjoyed seeing Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad will surely love this film and the many new characters that it brings to the DC Extended Universe.

Rating: ★★★★☆
