Booksmart (2019)

Dir. Olivia Wilde (trailer)

Told from an often ignored perspective, Booksmart is a wildly funny story of two high school best friends who are determined to spend their last night of senior year getting into all the mischief they missed out on their entire high school career. While over the top, Booksmart is also a deeply personal and heartfelt film about friendship and growing up. With a modern soundtrack and actress turned director Olivia Wilde at the helm, this film is an instant classic that today's generation will cherish for years to come.

Flipping the script on many early 2000s movies like Superbad, this movie centers on two straight A girls in their senior of high school. After confronting fellow students in the restroom at school, Molly, played by the incredible Beanie Feldstein, discovers that the kids who partied through high school got into the same prestigious universities that she did. Upon realizing that she could have spent high school having fun AND studying, she becomes determined to have the best night of her life before high school is over. Molly pulls her best friend Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) into the scheme, and they set off on a wild night around their town.

Rather than using the same shock and offensive humor that many high school movies use, Booksmart manages to be hilarious while using smart, witty humor that doesn't depend on hurting other people. While on their crazy night out, Molly and Amy encounter many interesting characters, such as the eccentric Gigi (Billie Lourd) and their run in with a strange pizza driver, to name just a few. These chance encounters help to complete their hope of attending a wild party while also allowing the film to reach absurd levels of comedy.

Of course, the film puts Molly and Amy's friendship to the test, as they realize they have different goals and desires in life and must learn that they can go their separate ways while still being the close friends they have always been.
