Dir. Alexandre Aja (trailer)
A fresh take on the classic creature feature, Crawl is a fun disaster film that doesn't take itself too seriously. Beginning with a swim meet, the audience is introduced to Haley (Kaya Scodelario), a college swimmer at University of Florida. Upon finding out that her sister is unable to reach their father during a hurricane, Haley sets out to find him.
While filmed on a small budget and set primarily in one location, the film makes use of the claustrophobic area by slowly forcing the main characters into tighter and tighter spaces. The film also makes good use of only having two main characters and very few supporting characters. Using skills that Haley and her father Dave (Barry Pepper) have, they help each other fight to stay alive as flood waters and alligators slowly occupy their basement.
Crawl perfectly blends suspense and horror, as well as some humor, and uses the alligators sparingly, as to not bore the audience by showing them too frequently. The CGI used in the film is also used the perfect amount and looks surprisingly good for such a small budget film.
Fans of classic campy creature features and disaster movies, such as Anaconda and The Day After Tomorrow, will surely enjoy this film.
