Gemini Man is another thrilling action film from visionary director Ang Lee, featuring Will Smith in a double role. Known for often incorporating emerging technologies into his films, Lee has created a movie unlike anything you have seen before. Using high frame-rate and de-aging technology, the visuals are crystal clear and allow you to see every second of action taking place on screen.
Smith plays an aging government sniper, who is pulled out of retirement after discovering that he was not always told the truth about the work he was doing. After discovering another agent, Danny, and avoiding a hit squad, Henry (Smith) and Danny (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) flee and fight for their lives. Henry soon discovers that the man sent to kill him is like a "ghost" and matches his every move, and as it turns out, is him.
Although the film is lacking in a strong script and has a loose plot structure, the novelty of seeing Will Smith face-off with the younger version of himself is worth watching the movie for. The de-aging technology is not 100% perfect and can often be jarring, especially due to the clarity of the picture, but the performances are still strong. Lee's decision to use 120fps high frame-rate pays off beautifully, especially due to the set pieces in colorful and vibrant places like Columbia.
I highly recommend this film to anyone who likes action movies and is interested in seeing the use of new technologies in film.
