Dir. Dario Argento (trailer)
Known best for his campy Italian horror films, director Dario Argento creates a creepy crawling story centered on Jennifer (Jennifer Connelly), a new arrival at an all-girls school in Sweden. Mysterious murders have been taking place in the area and once Jennifer witnesses one, she becomes the killer's next obsession. Even though the film stars a child actor, Argento does not stray away from the guts and gore, resulting in one of the most satisfyingly disturbing endings to a horror movie I've ever seen!
After witnessing a murder, Jennifer stumbles across Dr. John McGregor (Donald Pleasence), an entomologist, and his pet chimpanzee, who discovers that Jennifer has a special connection with insects. She uses this connection to get back at the mean girls at the school by summoning a swarm of insects. The film's use of the secluded all-girls school draws similarities between Argento's most famous film, Suspiria (1977), which both involve young women with special abilities having to fit in under extreme circumstances.
The final act of the film kept me on the edge of my seat: as each twist came along, I truly had no idea how the film would end. Shocking visual effects and the seemingly random use of heavy metal music will keep you entertained even if you're not completely scared.
I recommend this film to fans of horror and cult classics!
