Rocketman (2019)

Dir. Dexter Fletcher (trailer)

Rocketman is a magical, fantasy adventure exploring the life of musician Elton John that doesn't shy away from discussing darker times in his life, including his substance abuse. Beginning in 1950s London, the film introduces the audience to a young Elton being raised by his un-maternal mother and nurturing grandmother after his father leaves. He soon discovers the music of Elvis Presley and begins performing in local pubs with various bands before going on to be the superstar he is today.

Using Elton John's own songs, the film alternates between musical numbers to piece together the story of Elton's life. Beautifully sung by Taron Egerton, it is often easy to forget that you are not actually watching Elton John, but an actor. During the musical numbers the film ventures into a fantasy world full of great dance sequences and costume design.

While mostly focusing on Elton John's life, the film also delves into his working relationship with songwriter Bernie Taupin, played by the always charming Jamie Bell. Taupin and John have collaborated since the start of John's career, and the film focuses on how well they work together even while taking different paths in life. Another relationship the film focuses on is the toxic relationship John had with his manager and boyfriend John Reid (Richard Madden). These two relationships could not be more different, with one being supportive and the other being abusive.

I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys Elton John's music or just musicals in general! Even those unfamiliar with John's music will enjoy this film, as it is a well made and entertaining biography of one of the world's most famous musicians.
