Dir. Christopher Nolan (trailer)
Tenet is essential viewing for any fan of director Christopher Nolan. While this isn't Nolan's first time playing around with linear time in his films, this might be the most convoluted out of all of them. Where Memento, Dunkirk, and Inception ultimately made sense, Tenet is so obsessed with itself and being flashy, that plot points are underdeveloped and will leave the audience needing multiple viewings to understand it.
The film's plot is hard to describe, but generally revolves around a secret agent (John David Washington) working to stop a weapon from the future from destroying the present through a process the film calls "inversion". The agent slowly builds a team of trustworthy adversaries (Robert Pattinson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson) to help him takedown a Russian weapons-dealer (Kenenth Branagh) and becomes involved with the dealer's wife (Elizabeth Debicki).
While the film's plot became quickly overwrought with too many characters and too many strange things happening that are just quickly wrapped up at the end, the film does have many strong points. The action scenes are incredible and feature practical effects, such a crashing a real plane into a building, and are filled with interesting fight scenes meant to look like people fighting in reverse.
I often felt while watching it that it wasn't a Christopher Nolan film, that the dialog felt off, and it wasn't as tightly made as his previous movies. I still recommend this film, since it is one of the few original, non-remake movies released recently, and is still an interesting watch, even if it leaves you slightly unsatisfied by the end.
