The Big Year (2011)

by Emory Dunn on 2021-04-19T11:00:00-05:00 | 0 Comments

Dir. David Frankel (trailer)

The Big Year is a fun comedy about birding that follows three men as they each try to complete their Big Year - a quest to see as many bird species as possible within one year. Starring Owen Wilson as the rockstar of birdwatching and record holder, Steve Martin as a retiree trying to catch-up, and Jack Black as a working-class bird lover on a budget, each man competes against one another and their personal lives to become the World's Best Birdwatcher.

The film serves as a roadtrip movie of sorts too, as we follow the three men (and other irreverent characters) across the country from Galveston to Alaska and everywhere in-between. Throughout the film each of the main characters have personal struggles that they must contend with, which are mostly caused by their love for birding. Bostick (Wilson) has burned multiple marriages and is about to lose his most recent one to Jessica (Rosamund Pike) due to his prioritizing of The Big Year over their marriage, Harris (Black) has a strained relationship with his father who doesn't understand his love of birding, and Stu (Martin) is trying to retire as CEO from his company, but they keep asking him to back and help, getting in the way of his birdwatching.

The Big Year is a fun, harmless time at the movies that any comedy fan will enjoy and can be watched with the whole family!
