The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Dir. Drew Goddard (trailer)

Drew Goddard's impressive directorial debut The Cabin in the Woods is both unlike anything you have ever seen before and also exactly what you would expect from a horror movie. Reminiscent of Wes Craven's Scream series, The Cabin in the Woods follows a familiar construct, opening with a group of college students heading out for a long weekend trip to a isolated cabin owned by Curt (a young Chris Hemsworth)'s cousin. As the audience meets the characters, it is soon realized that the characters meet every horror movie trope known to man: the Jock, who is dating the "Whore", who is bestfriends with the Virgin, who is single and being set up with The Nerd, and a stoner-friend known as the Fool. As the characters meet their fates one-by-one, the story begins to unfold.

While the film can come off as campy or silly, that is exactly the point. The film is purposefully following the formulaic set-up of horror movies in order for the big pay off and plot twist to work. This film perfectly executes what it is trying to do, it is just up to audiences to open their minds and enjoy the ride the film is taking them on.

Once the plot-twist is revealed and fully understood, the film begins to kick into overdrive and becomes a full fledged bloodbath that doesn't take itself too seriously. Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins bring comedic relief to the film while also informing audiences of what is going on throughout the film. Featuring everything from zombies to underground secret control centers, once you experience The Cabin in the Woods it will become a favorite to watch over and over again.
