Wild Rose is a unique spin on the usual “Country & Western” movie theme. The film is based in Scotland, for one thing, and takes place in Glasgow. Rose is the main character, and at the beginning of the movie, she’s getting out of prison after a year on a drug charge. All she ever dreamed about was being a country singer. She’s wild, just as the movie proclaims, but she is trying hard to find her way. She’s unpredictable, unreliable and stormy, but struggles to mend the break she has made with her children. Even while the viewer might be wincing at her questionable choices, her charm wins the audience over. And when Rose sings, you almost forget about everything else. She is truly amazing.
Jessie Buckley, the Irish actress who plays Rose, does an incredible job. She portrays Rose with humor, passion and fragility. It’s a joy, as always, to see actress Julie Walters, who plays Rose’s “tough-love” mother who has put up with quite a lot. The soundtrack, also, is a country fan’s dream, with all of the best country legends.
I recommend this movie as something different and something real, and a movie with an ending that makes you believe in family, music and redemption.
