About Us

The mission of Volunteer Services is to invest in our community by providing engaging and enriching experiences that strengthen the bond between Helen Hall Library and its community.

Thank you for your interest in joining the Volunteer Services program at Helen Hall Library.  As a library, we deeply appreciate the work and commitment of our volunteer team.  Volunteers are vital in helping us keep the library clean, organized, and equipped to provide excellent services and successful programs to our community.   

Ways You Can Serve

We are always open to creating new opportunities for those seeking to connect with Helen Hall Library in unique ways. From shelving books to helping develop programs and events, we are confident you will find Helen Hall Library a highly rewarding place to serve.

Currently, volunteer opportunities fall into six main categories: Craft Assistant, Operational Support, Program Assistant, Reviewer, Shelving Assistant, and Special Events Assistant. Prospective volunteers can choose up to three of the categories that they're interested in.

Craft Assistant includes, but is not limited to:

  • Cutting out shapes and other materials
  • Coloring
  • Painting
  • Gluing

Operational Support includes, but is not limited to:

  • Dusting the shelves
  • Removing New Book stickers from books
  • Stamping discards
  • Assisting with weeding materials from the collection
  • Searching for titles on overdue/claims returned material list

Program Assistant includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assisting with setting up and breaking down programs
  • Assisting with the program as needed, which may include taking photos or videos

A Reviewer will do the following:

  • Write reviews on the books, movies, TV shows, CDs, and video games that are available in the library's collection
  • A 300 word writing sample is required to be turned in along with your application in order to be considered for the position

Shelving Assistant includes, but is not limited to:

  • Shelve materials in one or more sections of the library
  • Straighten the shelves in one or more sections of the library

A Special Events Assistant includes, but is not limited to:

  • Assisting with special one-off, seasonal, and/or outreach events as needed
  • Assisting with setting up, breaking down, and helping with guests

Requirements for Volunteering

In order to volunteer with Helen Hall Library, the following criteria must be met:

  • Must be age 12 or older
  • A completed application including emergency contact
    • Volunteers age 12-17 must also have guardian consent (included in Teen Application)
  • Completed and cleared background check (age 18+ only)
    • A link will be emailed to adult applicants upon review and approval of your application by the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Complete the Child Safety Training form
  • Participate in an informal 20-minute interview with the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Attend New Volunteer Orientation

Please Note: Orientation is by invitation only and is held the first Wednesday of every month.  Applications will be accepted until the 25th of each month for the subsequent orientation.  Applications received after the 25th of the month will be considered for the following subsequent orientation. (i.e. if you apply by May 25th, you'll be invited to the June Orientation.  If you apply June 27th, you'll be invited to the July Orientation)
