Teen Services: Adulthood

Are you about to become an adult? Growing up can be difficult, but these resources can support you on your journey!

Locating your personal documentation and keeping it organized is crucial for accessing important services, proving your identity, and handling legal matters as you transition into adulthood. Learning how to maintain and protect these records early on can help avoid stressful situations later.

  • Birth Certificate
An official document that records your birth details, including name, date of birth, and place of birth. It’s required for many legal processes like getting a passport or government ID.
  • Social Security Card
A card issued by the U.S. government that contains your unique Social Security number (SSN). This number is crucial for tax purposes, employment, and accessing benefits.
  • Government ID or Driver's License
A government-issued identification card, such as a state ID or driver’s license, used to verify your identity. It’s important to keep a photocopy in case the original is lost or stolen.
  • Immunization records
A record of vaccines you have received, often needed for school enrollment, medical care, or travel. Keeping these updated ensures your health and compliance with regulations. You can contact your current or past healthcare providers for these records. You can also request your immunization records or register to receive records through the Texas Immunization Registry.
  • Medical Records
Documents detailing your medical history, including past evaluations, diagnoses, medications, and contact information for healthcare providers. These records are important for continuity of care. Contact your current or past healthcare providers for medical records.
  • High School Diploma and Transcripts
Your diploma confirms graduation, and transcripts list courses and grades. Both are required for college applications, jobs, and other opportunities. Contact your high school or the district office to request your diploma or transcripts.
  • Passport or Immigrant Documents (if available)
Legal documents that prove your citizenship or immigration status, used for international travel and legal processes. Having copies ensures you're prepared if they are lost.
  • Records of Bank Accounts (if applicable)
Statements or records that provide details about your bank accounts. Keeping track of these helps you manage finances responsibly and prove ownership if needed. For specific information, it’s best to check directly with the bank where the account is held. Many banks have their own pages with instructions for accessing statements or records. You can usually find this under the "Help" or "FAQ" section of their website or by contacting customer service directly.
  • List of Trusted Contacts
A list of friends, family members, or trusted individuals with their contact details to ensure you can reach out for help or support when needed. Keep your list in a secure place, either electronically or in print.
  • Voter Registration Card (if applicable)
Proof that you are registered to vote. It is necessary for participating in elections and can sometimes serve as a form of ID.
