Beating Summer Slump

By Madison F.

Summer slump is something that affects people of all ages. When you get used to being at home and not going to bed until after 2:00am and then not waking up until after 2:00pm it gets hard to get back into the school routine. Obviously teenagers don't want to have to wake up at 5:00 am just to go to school and listen to teachers' lectures for 7 hours. However, there are some things that you can do to make getting back into the school routine easier and more enjoyable.

First off, start by slowly waking up earlier, that way your body will get used to starting the day earlier and still having energy by the end of it. If you can, workout when you wake up so your body is energized for the rest of the day. Yeah, I know that sounds tedious but it will make you more alert and awake for the rest of the day.

Second, eat a healthy breakfast before your long school day. Food is the body's main energizer and with the right foods you could change the entire outlook of your day. Fruits filled with Vitamin C like oranges, pineapples, strawberries, kiwis, and grapefruit can give you a great early morning start and keep stimulating your brain.

Last big thing is reading, not only does it keep your brain working, it also helps you focus. When we go on summer break we tend to lose focus faster when doing things. So by reading, you are gaining the focus and control back. I am not even saying reading 300 pages, or 5 hours a day. I am saying just reading for 30 minutes a day could increase concentration overall.

Summer slump is a big thing that affects all ages and makes getting back into the school routine harder. By doing little things, you can make the dreaded back to school process easier not only for your mind but for your body.
